Ep. 13: Inside a Mixed Use Home and Planning Studio That Could Reinvent Neighbourhoods
Explore Kensington Corner, a thoughtfully designed micro-scale mixed-use development in Calgary, Alberta. This unique project combines a residential home for a family of three with the office of Intelligent Futures, a firm dedicated to advancing strategies for the common good. On the residential side, the home balances comfort and efficiency. Designed with purpose, the home embodies minimalist principles while providing functional, inviting living spaces. The office side reflects Intelligent Futures’ mission and values, offering a collaborative environment with both open and private workspaces, and flexible meeting areas. Sustainability takes center stage, with the building boasting an all-electric design, solar integration, and high-performance construction standards. Social sustainability also plays a critical role, fostering interaction, creativity, and community engagement. A standout feature is a vibrant street-facing mural by Daniel Kirk, symbolizing hope, ideas, and place. The project highlights the value of blending home and work life in a sustainable, community-centered way, echoing the corner store tradition of past neighborhoods.
